Humane League Marches with Hotel Workers
Fourteen activists marched as an animal liberation contingent with UNITE HERE Local 7 and several hundred of their supporters at a huge march and rally on Tuesday November 18. Workers at the Sheraton City Center Hotel have been working without a union contract since April 2006 and marched to demand safe, family-supporting jobs. Tuesday marked the one year anniversary of a boycott of the Sheraton called for by Local 7.
The Humane League of Baltimore marched to support good jobs in Baltimore and connect the union's fight for social justice to the larger struggle for justice for all, including animals. Thanksgiving Day Parade Saturated with Leaflets
On Saturday, November 22, volunteers distributed over 1200 leaflets to people gathered for Baltimore's annual Thanksgiving Day Parade. People eagerly took vegan recipes, many asked for additional copies to give to others, and in the end over a thousand parade-goers received information about vegan alternatives to the usual dishes prepared for the holidays. A big THANK YOU to the volunteers who braved the cold to help spread a message of compassion to open minds and hands!

Kali's Restaurant Group Says "No" to Foie Gras
Kali's Restaurant Group, which owns three of Baltimore's most renowned fine restaurants, has made the compassionate decision to not serve foie gras after learning how it is produced. We applaud Kali's for their decision and ask that you thank them by bringing your friends and family to dine at any of their restaurants. In particular, Kali's Mezze offers a delectable vegan selection, take a moment and check them out at www.kalismezze.com. We also plan to celebrate some of our Veg Socials at Mezze so keep an eye out for them!
College Leafleting Tour Wrap Up
Over 10,000 leaflets handed out in 9 days
By visiting 10 colleges in 9 days, volunteers with the Humane League of Baltimore and Defending Animal Rights Today and Tomorrow were able to distribute 10,777 leaflets to students all throughout Maryland and DC. Leafleting to students is some of the most valuable outreach as students are at a critical learning stage in life and are questioning the status quo and are therefor receptive to our message. One student already reported to us that she went vegan as a result of receiving a leaflet. It is truly incredible how a simple action such as handing someone a piece of paper can change their life and save hundreds of animals.
We could not have done this if it weren't for the generous support of our members who really came through for us, and therefor the animals, and donated food, gas money and time to leaflet. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to Vegan Outreach (www.VeganOutreach.org) who donated the literature for this project.
Pig Wrestling Update
Spring Meadow Farms Sells Pigs
Sadly, Spring Meadow Farms refused our offer to rescue the pigs and piglets. They coldly sold them for slaughter and had a pig roast in spite of the compassionate people that fought for them. We will never forget what Spring Meadow Farms has done and we ask you to please boycott their farm.
Although we were unable to save the pigs from slaughter, the public outcry and opposition the farm had received set a precedent which will most likely prevent future pig wrestling in Maryland. The pig wrestling event which was supposed to be a month long and happen every year, was shut down after the very first day. This is a true testament to the power that we as consumers have and should continue to use in our fight for animals.
